R. Eric Thomas Visits Community Book Club

On Dec 12, the Grace Community Book Club welcomed R. Eric Thomas, author of Kings of B’more, to join their second meeting of the academic year.

Thomas spoke about how he got his start writing a column for Elle Magazine, his study of playwriting, and how he was pushed to write this YA novel based on an essay he wrote in his debut collection, Here for It: Or, How to Save Your Soul in America. The young adult novel explores the friendship between two young, queer Black boys from Baltimore and their last adventure before one of them moves away to North Carolina – think Ferris Bueller’s Day Off if it were written and directed by Ryan Coogler. The Book Club thanks R. Eric Thomas for taking the time to meet with the group and for answering our questions, and an immense thanks to middle school teacher Morika Tsujimura for facilitating the connection. We look forward to Thomas’ next venture!

The Office of Community Engagement hosts a Community Book Club in the HS Writing Center from 5:30-7pm and reads 5-6 books per year. Created by Dean of Faculty Kim Chaloner and Dean of Equity and Inclusion Jean-Robert Andre, the Book club partners with the Diversity Council to discuss a range of themes and writing styles. This year, the book club will read:
