Whether you're a newcomer or a returning gardener, grow with us this year in the Family Garden. This unique hands-on program teaches kids ages 3–12 all about the joys of planting, tending, harvesting, and eating their very own fresh produce. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall, kids work in pairs to cultivate plots of tasty vegetables, fragrant herbs, and bright flowers in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden.

  CHILDREN’S CLASSES: Since 1914, children ages 2 to 17 have been growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs and learning firsthand about the natural world in Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Children’s Garden. Classes run three to six weeks and children must register in advance.
  
  

  DROP-IN FAMILY WORKSHOPS: From May to September and during select school breaks, the Discovery Garden offers fun activities, plantings, and open-ended exploration workshops free with garden admission. Workshops are on a drop-in basis and appropriate for a broad range of ages.

  New York City has an abundance of Green Markets where you can purchase sustainable and organic products while supporting local farmers. Many of the Green Markets are open year round.

• How to garden @ home in NYC

  Planting herbs inside your home is easy and enjoyable

  
  Here are some quick suggestions for indoor gardening:

  1. Use a recycled container. Make sure the container has a few holes in the bottom to let the water drain.
  2. Put soil in the containers, almost to top.
  3. Using your finger, poke 2-3 holes about 1/2" deep and drop one seed in each hole.
  4. Lightly cover with soil and place your pot in a bowl. Allow the plant to soak up water from the bottom, so the seeds don't get washed away.
  5. Cover the pots with plastic wrap to create a greenhouse (keep moisture and heat in). Once seeds germinate, remove the plastic.
  6. Water 2-3 times a week from the bottom.
  7. Place plants near windows. They make their food from the sun.
