Service is an integral part of life at GCS. As a community that serves, we challenge our students to extend their academic learning to improve their world via an extensive list of local and global opportunities and experiences. GCS students might be exploring the issue of food security while serving in a food pantry in Manhattan, examining education equity while working with neighborhood students on the Lower East Side, or learning about climate and fossil fuels while helping to provide bikes to a rural community in East Africa. In each experience we seek to become better community members and partners in the work of creating a just and sustainable world.

We emphasize opportunities to build a healthier and more sustainable city through organizations like the GO Project, City Harvest and Reading Partners, among others.
Students in each grade work to develop and carry out a class service project. Additionally, middle schools students begin in-house community service in Grade 5, graduating to a service learning program with local and global organizations in Grades 7 and 8. High School students participate in a service learning program that culminates in a team-based independent project completed in their junior or senior year. Families are invited to join our work through Family Community Service Day, organized by the Parents Association every year.
