Griffins Wrap Up an Impressive Winter Season

It was an exciting couple of weeks as Grace’s student-athletes wrapped up the winter season with several championship performances!

The Girls Varsity Basketball team earned a thrilling 38–34 comeback victory over Trinity in the NYSAIS quarterfinals. After trailing 17–5 early in the game, the team rallied in front of a spirited home crowd to secure the win and advance to the NYSAIS semifinals against Nightingale, where they narrowly missed the title in a game that showcased the team’s incredible teamwork and sportsmanship. It was a successful postseason for the Boys Varsity Basketball team as well, who, thanks to strong performance throughout the regular season, reached the NYCAL Semifinals and hosted a home playoff game for the first time since 2016.

The Junior Varsity and Middle School Basketball teams also celebrated big wins. The JV Girls team successfully defended their regular and postseason NYCAL Championship for the third year in a row, finishing the season with a 15–1 record and remaining unbeaten in NYCAL games. The JV Boys team ended the season with their best record in three years—13–8 and 11–3 in league play,, which earned them a #2 seed and a home playoff game. Middle schoolers proved there’s much to be excited about in the years ahead, with the Girls 7 / 8 team winning the Town Tournament to cap off a 13–2 season and both the Boys and Girls Teams winning the Grace Invitational. 

At the NYSAIS Fencing Championships at Hackley, the Boys Saber team—Carson L. ’28, Harold J. ’27, and Dylan A. ’28—finished an impressive fifth overall.

The Varsity Squash team traveled to Philadelphia for the US Squash National Tournament, where the team staged a strong comeback on Sunday morning to finish third in their division.

The Varsity Swim team had an excellent meet with eight podium finishes, highlighted by Jago O. ’27, who captured gold in the Boys 50 Yard Freestyle and bronze in the Boys 100 Yard Butterfly. Additional standout performances included podium finishes from Mark S. ’27, who added two third-place finishes, in the Boys 200 Yard IM and Boys 500 Yard Freestyle. Other strong showings included Rayah M. ’28, who placed fourth in the Girls 200 Yard IM, and Sophia D. ’27, who finished fourth in the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle. Grace also earned fourth-place finishes in both freestyle relays. The Boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team—Mark S. ’27, Jackson K. ’27, Eamonn H. ’27, and Jago O. ’27—placed fourth, while the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Ashy M. ’27, Rayah M. ’28, Ava A. ’27, and Sophia D. ’27 also finished fourth.

The winter season concluded at the NYSAIS Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Armory, where Grace athletes had an impressive showing. Highlights included a bronze medal in the Boys 55m Hurdles for Miles F. ’27; bronze in the Boys High Jump for Sebby P. ’27; silver in the Girls Pole Vault for Herschel T. ’28; and a bronze medal performance from the Boys 4×200 Relay team (Oscar P. ’27, Miles F. ’27, Daniel G. ’28, Wesley T. ’26). The stellar individual performances were punctuated by team successes, with both the Boys and Girls teams clinching the NYCAL Championship.
