Students meet three times per cycle in two different groupings. They follow a method referred to as "Teaching Games for Understanding" allowing the students to analyze each others performance. The students have the opportunity to discuss and identify team weaknesses, strengths, execute specific drills and give their suggestions for improving overall efforts thus allowing the 6th graders the opportunity to problem solve. Sports units include flag football, volleyball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee, softball, lacrosse, badminton, rugby, cricket, team handball and whiffle ball. Seventh grade physical education uses a sports education model approach. The students have had their skills developed from K - 6 by our department and now the students will be engaged in much more game play. Throughout seventh grade physical education the students will participate in a number of team sport tournaments. Before team games begin, every class will begin with a dynamic warm-up. During the warm-up phase of the class students will begin to learn the importance of stretching the major muscle groups, and be introduced to a cardio vascular endurance regimen. The early exposure to these routines will give them an early understanding of life long fitness. Tournament play will allow the students to explore different game play strategies. Different offensive and defensive formations will be explained and encouraged to be implemented. During flag football and basketball students will be asked to come up with their own offensive ideas and collaborate with their classmates to start to understand the true concept of team play. During team sports the main goal is to have the individuals start to play together as a unit.
