From Head of School Robbie Pennoyer:

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Julie Porter as Grace’s Interim Director of Lower School. Dr. Porter is an experienced independent school leader whose work is guided by a simple, steady north star: children first. Across nearly three decades in education, she has built and led school communities grounded in strong relationships, thoughtful systems, and clear, compassionate leadership. She will be joining the Grace community upon our return from spring break in April, working closely with our other academic leaders to ensure a smooth transition.

Dr. Porter earned an Ed.D in Education and Organizational Leadership from California Coast University, an M.A. in humanities from California State, and a B.A. in history from Dominican College of San Rafael. Her leadership experience spans kindergarten through twelfth grade environments and includes redesigning curricula, mentoring and retaining faculty, partnering closely with families, and ensuring that academic rigor and student well-being remain tightly connected. She describes her leadership style as collaborative and relational, focused on listening, grounded in honest communication, and steady during moments of complexity and transition. Throughout the search process, the committee was impressed by her warmth, thoughtfulness, and ability to build relationships and engage in meaningful conversations about children, schools, and community. Her strong commitment to dignity and belonging aligns deeply with Grace’s mission and values.

When asked what drew her to the Grace community, she shared, “There is a real sense that kids are known, cared for, and taken seriously, not just as students but as people. That came through right away, and it is the kind of community I want to be part of. I am excited about the energy of a Lower School where learning is joyful and meaningful, where classrooms are full of curiosity, conversation, and a willingness to try things out. I am also really looking forward to the relationships with students, with teachers, and with families.”

Dr. Porter is eager to begin getting to know our students and community members, and there will be several upcoming opportunities for families to meet her in the coming weeks. Please join me in welcoming her to Grace.
