GCS High School Students Attend AHA Annual Meeting

Grace Church School High School students attended the American Historical Association (AHA) 2015 Annual Meeting, where they sat in on graduate-level workshops in a range of areas of study including Ukranian, Middle Eastern and Civil War History.
GCS faculty member Jason McDonald chaperoned Kristen Dahlberg '16, Daniel Han '18, Theo Kaufman '16, Sarah '17, Ian Porter '18, and William Samulski '18. Mr. McDonald, the High School Technology Integrator since the High School Division opened two years ago, began teaching eleventh grade History this semester.

William Samulski '18 attended a lecture called “Mass Death in World War I” about the Lebanese famine and the Armenian genocide. He said, “One interesting thing I learned was that a third of the population of greater Syria died in the war, because of famine and genocide. Greater Syria was part of the Ottoman Empire, and Mount Lebanon was where the famine was. The presenters were very well-spoken. Even though some information was hard to follow, it was interesting.”

Medieval History interests Sarah '17. She went to a workshop on Foucault and one on Medieval Sacraments. Sarah said,  “I am glad to have had the opportunity to attend the conference. The material was dense but stimulating. It was the first time I had been to an event of this sort. It was a rewarding experience. I look forward to the next one.” Sarah also toured the poster exhibition by History graduate students from around the United States.

Ian Porter '17 is interested in Modern History. He attended a workshop entitled “Crises of the 1970s.” Ian remarked, "I thought it was really interesting to learn that some of the events that still affect us today first happened in the seventies."

Because the AHA Annual Meeting covered a huge range of topics, students were able to explore specific historical events in depth. Kristen Dahlberg '16 attended a workshop on medieval European midwifery. She said, "AHA was a wonderful experience where I was able to listen to experts in different fields of history. Learning about subjects not explored in school was very fascinating for me. "

The AHA is one of two professional associations for historians in the United States. most members are college professors, but the Association is open to historians outside the academic canon. Mr. McDonald was able to arrange tickets through the AHA because of his membership. He will complete his doctorate in American History in 2020 at Fordham University.
