Isca Greenfield-Sanders: Playground Parachutes
This installation of four large-scale murals by the celebrated artist Isca Greenfield-Sanders, was made in collaboration with over 200 children. Forthis community-based, public art project, the artist chose a single image from her 2008 parachute series. She gridded the image into 72 square tiles, and then printed them in the four basic CMYK colors – blue, pink, yellow and black. The tiles were then enhanced with colored pencils by young artists at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (“CMA”), who explored mark making techniques with CMA Teaching Artists. The colored pieces were returned to the artist, who reassembled the composition. The artist’s original image, clearly recognizable, is now enhanced with the visions of the many students who added to the tiles.

Greenfield-Sanders, who lives downtown in New York City with her family, says: “The murals feel delightfully playful, the children drew with equal parts glee and sophistication. I was really inspired by these young artists!”

This project was realized through the collaboration of Greenfield-Sanders and NYC Parks with Green Below 14, SmartSpaces and the Children’s Museum of the Arts.
