Observing the Transgender Day of Remembrance

Today, November 20 marks the 22nd annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day commemorating the lives of transgender and gender-nonconforming people lost to fatal violence.
A study by the HRC (Human Rights Campaign) marks 2021 the deadliest year against transgender and gender-nonconforming people since it started tracking anti-transgender violence in 2013. Transgender and gender-nonconforming youths are more likely to face hostile school environments, and affinity spaces catered to them can help mitigate these effects. A study by GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) indicates that having GSAs (Gay and Straight Alliances) and other LGBTQ+ supportive spaces in schools can reduce the negative side effects of hostile school environment for transgender youths.

Grace Church School honors the lives of the victims lost to anti-transgender violence. Our LGTBQ+ affinity and alliance groups such as Spectrum, Change and Bicons+ aim to affirm and support LGBTQ+ students and allies of all grades. Throughout the year they plan and host events and chapels for the whole community. For more information about Grace’s affinity and alliance spaces, click here.
