Grace Griffins Round Out a Strong Fall Season

After a year without competitive sports, Grace athletes came back strong this fall.
Whether they were going the distance during cross country meets or scoring goals in soccer matches, the Grace Griffins did nothing short of their best across the board, soaring to great heights as a result. “Our Athletics department is beyond thrilled to have our teams back in competition,” said Illi Armijos, Director of Athletics. “This special group [of athletes] lifted each other up, showed resilience when things didn't go their way and gave it their all...we’re so proud.”

Here’s a recap of how some of our teams did this season:

Soccer
After a challenging season, the Girls Varsity Soccer team are officially the 2021 Athletic Conference of Independent Schools (ACIS) Girls Varsity Soccer Playoff champions. On October 29, the young athletes gave it their all, nabbing the “W” and a championship banner that will commemorate their victory for years to come. Of the win, Head Coach Mayra Carrasco said, “it took rising up and it took fight, but most importantly it took so much heart.”

Cross Country
Over at the Middle School, the Grades 7/8 cross country team has had a strong season, improving their times with every meet. Of their strong performance, 7/8 cross country coach Aaron Roberts said, “I’m so proud of each and every athlete for showing up, working hard, and reaching their individual goals.” One Griffin in particular, eighth grader Shanel T., won first place in four out of seven races this season, competing against over 100 student athletes from New York City and Westchester. She concluded the season with a personal record of 10:18 over the mile and a half course.

The Boys Varsity Cross Country team has also had a good run this season, winning four out of the six ACIS regular season meets. During the ACIS Championship Race, which took place on Wednesday, November 3, senior Isaac T. rounded out a strong season by coming in first place. He’d previously finished first in every boys individual race leading up to the championships. Fellow senior Will M. also ranked high in the final race of the season, finishing in third place.

Volleyball
The Middle School 7/8 Girls Volleyball team had a great season, finishing with a 10-1 record.

Tennis
The Girls Varsity tennis team is wrapping up the regular season 11-2 and finished second in the New York City Athletic League (NYCAL).

Congratulations to all of the athletes! Here’s to another great season!
