New Early Childhood Head Appointed

Yojairy Sands has been appointed the next Head of Early Childhood beginning July 1, replacing Cheryl Kelly after her long tenure. Yojairy (pronounced Joe-HI-ree) comes to Grace from The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine where she serves as the Lower School Dean and K-2 Math Specialist. Prior to working at Cathedral, Yojairy taught kindergarten and second grade at a charter school in Harlem and was an associate teacher at the Trinity School.
In her role as Lower School Dean at Cathedral, Yojairy leads the associate teacher program and is especially passionate about guiding teachers in the development and implementation of equitable and inclusive classroom practices. “Part of what drew me to Grace was its commitment to antiracism and the efforts it has already made to create spaces where everyone is valued and welcome. Even over Zoom, the warmth and care of the community shines through! I am so excited to continue my journey as a leader and educator as part of the Grace community. I hope to continue to build on the wonderful legacy that Cheryl is leaving in the Early Childhood Division."

Yojairy is the proud mom of two children. Her daughter, Charly, is in the 4th grade and her son, Aaron, is in kindergarten. When it isn’t snowing, Yojairy enjoys going on hikes in Van Cortlandt Park and Isham Park with her husband, Charles, and their children. They also enjoy baking together and, of course, talking about the math involved in cooking. Yojairy received her Master's of Education from Hunter College in 2008. She completed her B.A. in English Literature with a minor in religion in 2001. In the years in between, she worked as a women’s minister for her church.
