Three Grace Students Honored for Photography & Writing

Three Grace students won awards in this the 2020 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Two of the students, Drew L. ‘21 and Elisa K. ‘24 received distinctions for their photography while a third, Camryn D. ‘21, was awarded for her essay.
Selected by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts, Drew, Camryn and Elisa’s works were awarded for “excellence in originality, technical skill, and the emergence of technical voice and vision,” according to a letter sent from The Alliance of Young Artists & Writers. All of their submissions will be published in the Art & Writing Online Galleries this June. They will also be published in The Best Teen Art and Best Team Writing anthologies, which feature a selection of work by National Medalists, and their names will be listed in the anthologies’ supplementary 2020 Yearbook.

After submitting several photographs in the national competition, Drew’s photography was awarded two Regional Gold Keys, an Honorable Mention, and most recently, a Silver Medal. In addition to these accolades, Drew’s work will also be displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art when it reopens.

When asked about the recognition of his work, Drew said “I took this photo out of a window at a hotel and really loved the composition. I decided that I'd send it, along with a few other photographs, to the Scholastic Artists and Writers Alliance. I didn't have high expectations, and I was very surprised, but also extremely excited, to get any recognition. Above all else, this honor makes me feel that the photographs that I take move people. It also encourages me to continue to pursue this art form."

Congrats are also in order for Camryn D. ‘21 and Elisa K. ‘24, who’s submissions to the competition were awarded as well. Camryn received a Gold Medal and the Civic Expression Award for her piece “The Roots of Racism in Healthcare”, which was published in Teen Vogue in February. Elisa received a Silver Medal for her black and white photograph “bikes.”
