Eighth Grader Co-Founds Charity Golf Tournament

After attending the President’s Cup as a spectator a few years ago, Mariah B. ‘26 was determined to create a golf tournament of her own.
This weekend, she will be hosting and competing in The Lady Liberty Cup, a two day Ryder Cup-style charity tournament during which the top six teen girl golf players from New York and New Jersey will go head to head at Liberty National Golf Club. All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting Minds Matter, a foundation that aims to “[empower] young people from low-income families to achieve college readiness and success,” per their website.

When asked about her feelings about the event, Mariah could not help but express her joy. “I am extremely excited about the inaugural Lady Liberty Cup because I am thrilled to play against and with all of these amazing golfers, while being about to raise money for charity all in one.”

On April 26, Mariah was interviewed by Golf Channel’s Jimmy Roberts, who asked her questions about the event and her love of golf. When asked to elaborate on what inspired her to co-found the Lady Liberty Cup, Mariah noted that she “loved how in an individual sport, [players could come together] in a team effort.” The interview was televised live as a part of NBC’s “On Her Turf” program, which aims to shine a light on the accomplishments of women in sports. You can watch the interview here.

While Mariah has been playing on Grace’s Varsity Golf team since the seventh grade, she’s been an avid golfer for six years. Since falling in love with the sport during a family vacation, she has dedicated much of her time to perfecting her game; It’s fair to say her efforts have paid off. “Last time I went to the World Championships, I placed 34th in the world and in my age group,” she noted during her interview. Earlier this year, she also placed third in her age group in the U.S. Kids Golf Regional Tournament.

“Mariah is such a valuable member of our varsity team and community,” started Associate Director of Athletics and Varsity Golf Coach Tim Quinn. “She’s not only a great individual player, but a great teammate as well. She has a keen understanding of course management and reading greens, and is always willing to pass along advice to her teammates. I am so proud of Mariah and do not doubt that this is only the beginning of a successful future for her on and off the golf course.”

The Lady Liberty cup begins tomorrow, April 30 and will end on May 1.
