Dear GCS Parents,

The GCS school uniform is designed to accomplish four main tasks. We need the help and support of our families if we are going to be successful in achieving these goals. Please only buy uniform items for your child. If children come to school dressed inappropriately, they will know that they are out of uniform and it will make them feel like "rule breakers."

  • First, it removes, to the extent possible, issues of clothing competition and commercialized fashion from the daily lives of our students and allows them to focus on the more important jobs of learning and growing.
  • Second, it provides identity and a sense of membership in the community of the school through the consistent use of symbols such as the crest and colors.
  • Third, it allows all of the children in this economically diverse community full access, as all elements of the uniform are available at a reasonable price either through the school or the uniform company.
  • Fourth, it provides clothing that is both comfortable and appropriate for the activities of the school day.

I also want to highlight a few issues for you:

  • Girls in the Lower School and Early Childhood should own at least one navy jumper as they will be required to wear that jumper on Photo Day, Thanksgiving, The Christmas Pageant and the Lower School and Early Childhood Closing exercises in June. (They can own more and wear them any other day as well.)
  • All students need to have at least one white shirt, preferably with a crest, to wear on the special occasions mentioned above.
  • Girls in the Lower school and Early Childhood must wear the crested polo or turtleneck with logo when they are wearing the skorts or the slacks.
  • The slacks that the girls wear in the winter must come from Lands' End and must be straight legged with no cargo pockets. Boys may not wear cargo or flared pants either. Lands' End has both flared pants and cargo pants but they are not uniform. (Girls who come to school in non-uniform pants will be given a jumper to wear. Boys will be given uniform pants or sweatpants to wear if they arrive in non-uniform pants.)
  • Footwear should be dark colors or grey. Sneakers may have highlights, but the body of the sneaker should be dark. Sandals are not allowed.
  • Only earrings of the studded type are allowed—no dangling or hoop earrings are to be worn in the school for issues of safety.

The uniform code can seem complicated. We have endeavored to make it easier for everyone to understand. If you have questions, please feel free to call Linda Cooper, your division head or me.
