Philosophy of the Science Department

at

Grace Church School

The topics in science are chosen to spiral and connect for each grade level. This results in a natural flow of scientific concepts from grade to grade. This also provides our students with a broad base of scientific literacy, which hopefully establishes a commitment to the subject.

We feel that students should be challenged to learn and stimulated in their learning by classroom activities. They develop scientific thinking skills through student-run investigations such as the Science Fair in the 7th and 8th grades, lab activities and resulting discussions in all grades. The students are given opportunities to work alone as well as in small groups.

The children's growth and development are assessed daily by the teacher's observations and communicated directly to the students. There are also written homework assignments and periodic tests given to the students.

The members of the department discuss course content, design and structure. We observe the students' responses to the stimuli of the various offerings. We confer with colleagues at other institutions to compare offerings. Finally, we try to keep abreast of any changes in the field of science education.
