Religion
and Ethics at Grace
In addition to the ethical teaching and imparting of values implicit
in every activity of a school, Grace Church School, in keeping with
its mission, provides a chaplain and a department of religion and ethics
staffed by the chaplain and two other teachers with credentials in religion
and values education. Grace has chosen to incorporate a separate
curriculum devoted to religion and ethics in Grades Three through
Eight and holds weekly chapel services throughout the year. All students
are expected to participate in the course of study, to attend chapel
and to understand and respect the place of religious commitment in our
world. The aim of the curriculum is not to proselytize, catechize
or inculcate Christianity, but to help students become familiar with
and respect the place of religion in life, particularly the Judeo-Christian
tradition. There are three courses in the Bible, in Grades Three, Four
and Five, two courses in ethics, in Grades Six and Eight, and
one course in world religions, in the Grade Seven. Three goals underlie
this curriculum: 1) to promote familiarity with biblical stories and
themes which underlie so much of our western culture; 2) to recognize
that ethics can be studied both as part of a religious system and as
a subject in its own right; and 3) to appreciate the place that religions
hold in both western and non-western societies.
The Chaplaincy
The
chaplain is an Episcopal priest who administers the program of weekly
chapel services and teaches three of the courses in the department of
religion and ethics.
