Goals and Objectives

 

  • To study excellent examples of both contemporary and classic literature and poetry.
  • To develop an analytical approach to literature.
  • To encourage students to think of literature as an element of culture that simultaneously shapes and is shaped by society.
  • To develop students' interest in reading for pleasure.
  • To develop students' understanding of the writing process.
  • To develop students' proficiency in five basic kinds of writing: academic (expository, analytic, and argumentative), expressive (informal, raw writing), creative (poems, short stories), real world (letters, reports) and journalistic.
  • To help students develop effective writing habits.
  • To help students develop a sense of their own writing style.
  • To help students master basic principles of grammar.
  • To develop students' ability to proofread and edit their written work.
  • To extend and encourage students' use of the computer as a writing and research tool.
  • To review and master basic rules of spelling, capitalization and punctuation.
  • To study vocabulary systematically.
  • To study word origins and Greek and Latin roots.
  • To give students the opportunity to publish their writing in The Scribbler, The Beat and the yearbook.
  • To prepare students effectively for high school.
