Goals and Objectives

 

  • To instill in children an eagerness to read and write
  • To give children an opportunity to be authors by recording their dictated ideas and stories and by collecting their written work in a journal
  • To give each child opportunities to speak and listen in class meetings
  • To extend each child's spoken, listening and sight reading vocabulary
  • To reinforce left-right and top-down directionality in reading
  • To model proper language usage in conversations
  • To help children follow oral directions
  • To provide opportunities for regular visits to the school library
  • To give children the opportunity to create class books
  • To teach children to recognize and identify the letters of the alphabet
  • To increase phonetic awareness by teaching letter/sound correspondence
  • To teach children the D'Nealian printed alphabet
  • To help children develop a proper pencil grip
  • To teach the children the spelling of their own names and other high-frequency words
  • To expose children to language through reading them excellent examples of children's literature
  • To introduce children to the process of finding information in books
  • To give children opportunities to participate in book discussions
  • To have children experience writing as a social activity
  • To recognize and respect the range of language development in the group
  • To encourage each child's development at his or her own pace
  • To encourage the use of language as a tool in social interactions
