A positive self-image and the joy of participating in group music making are at the core of the various music performance opportunities at Grace Church School.
All Lower School students have two music assemblies each year for an invited audience. Age-appropriate material is used for these performances. Much classroom time is spent on preparing the students for each event.
Specific Grace Church School performance ensembles include:
The GCS Chorus:
The GCS Chorus is a non-auditioned group comprised of fourth and fifth grade students. The GCS Chorus presents two major concerts each year—A Holiday Choral Concert in December and a Spring Choral Concert at the end of the school year. The GCS Chorus also participates in Grace Church School's Thanksgiving Service, Christmas Pageant and Early Childhood/Lower School Closing Exercises.
The GCS Singers:
The GCS Singers is an elective offered in the fall and spring terms. Any sixth, seventh and eighth grade students may audition for the group. The Fall GCS Singers present a Holiday Choral Concert in December, and they also participate in Grace Church School's Thanksgiving Service and Christmas Pageant. The Spring GCS Singers present a Spring Choral Concert at the end of the school year.
A highlight of the Fall GCS Singers term is holiday caroling at Beth Israel Hospital's Pediatric Floor and at The Jewish Guild for the Blind's Guild School.
The GCS Orchestra:
The GCS Orchestra brings students together from the three different instrumental music classes offered at Grace Church School: flute, violin and cello. The Orchestra meets after school and is typically composed of 10 to 12 student Upper School students. They present a Spring Concert at the end of the school year.
The Guitar Elective Band:
Guitar lessons are offered to Upper School students as an elective. It is usually a small group of three to four students. Most years, they perform as a band for school assemblies, chapels and occasionally for outside functions.
