Philosophy
Music literacy
is something everyone can and should enjoy. The philosophy of
the music program at Grace is rooted in this premise, which was the
key to the philosophy of Zoltan Kodaly. Kodaly was a Hungarian
composer, musicologist, educator and philosopher. He believed
music education is necessary for the formulation of the total human
being. Since children understand best what they experience, the
Kodaly approach has children use their voices to experience the making
of music.
Kodaly's philosophy
depends on having music presented as a joy for the pupil so that it
instills in the child "a thirst for finer music...which will last
for a lifetime." With this philosophy at the heart of the
music education at Grace, our program aids children in their well-balanced
social and artistic development, and it produces musically literate
children. These children grow into adults who can continue to
make music and/or into future audiences who can fully appreciate a diverse
range of music.
