Welcome to Dance at GCS!
Early Childhood Music and Dance Dance is an active part of the school-wide curriculum and reflects the school’s mission to firmly establish self-confidence in the student’s ideas and abilities. As an art form, it confirms the role of creative expression and the development of physical skill while teaching to the child's whole self. In the young child, musical expression and dance expression are closely linked. Consequently, students in Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten, the Early Childhood Division, participate in combined Music and Dance classes. These classes are based on the belief that music ability and dance ability are extensions of basic life skills such as walking and talking, and come from the inborn need for self-expression through the human body. The program seeks to develop these abilities while enabling the child to participate with confidence and pleasure in the music and dance styles of our culture, to appreciate the music and dance styles of other cultures, and to participate in creative learning experiences involving the child's whole self and their immediate community. Children in the first through third grades, the Lower School Division, have separate music and dance classes. While the curricula respect and reflect each other, dance skills and musical skills can be developed more fully in these settings. Please follow the links below for more information on dance in the two divisions. For information on music in the Lower School, please visit Music on the Arts homepage.
