Varsity Soccer Teams at Grace Church School

The fall of 1996 Team

The Varsity Soccer Team had a fun and productive season this year. We played a total of eight games. There were, however, three rain-outs against Columbia Prep, Little Red School House, and Day. There was also one game against V.C.S., where the opponents simply failed to show up. The first game, which was an away at St. Luke's, was an exciting one. Most of the team had never been on Varsity Soccer before, and were anxious to experience the new level of competition it offered. Twice in the game, Grace took the lead, but twice the St. Luke's team battled back. The final score was 2 -2. This proved to be the first of many ties to come. As a response to the two goals scored against them, Coach Divéki, Assistant Coach Calvo, and Captain Matthew Leffel, decided to strengthen the defense drastically. This, along with great goalkeeping by goalie Christine Maddock, led to the next two games, resulting in 0 -0. Not until the final two games, against Collegiate and St. David's, did Grace concentrate more on its offense and pick up its first two victories. The team's final record was 2 -2 -4. Congratulations!
