Middle School Performing Arts Expanding

The Middle School will kick of the school year with a new schedule, inspired by the successful model implemented in the High School Division. The new schedule allows for an augmented Performing Arts program for grades five through eight, including options such as band, strings, vocal and dance.
In band they may choose among flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone or percussion. Strings include violin, viola, cello and bass. There will be beginning and advanced instrumental instruction. Current 9th and 10th graders in the band brought their instruments over to 86 Fourth Ave. last spring for a demonstration to help younger students decide which instrument to choose.

The vocal option gives students in grades four through eight new choices. The entire fourth grade will form a chorale, and the chorus will now include fifth and sixth grades. Students who opt for the vocal ensemble in grades seven and eight will study singing technique and present choral performances.

Students in contemporary dance will meet twice a week and will learn choreography as well as dance. They will perform in assemblies and perhaps off-campus at local institutions. GCS Singers continue as an elective for grades six, seven and eight.

The presence of the High School Division has opened a number of new opportunities for students at 86 Fourth Avenue. In addition to this year’s expanded arts program, last year brought a host of new sports offerings.
